Clear Lake

Clear Lake City was created through a joint venture of Humble Oil and Refining Company (now Exxon-Mobil U.S.A.) and the Del E. Webb Corporation. In 1938, oil man and rancher James Marion West, whose venerable mansion still stands on the shores of Clear Lake, sold 30,000 acres in southern Harris County to Humble Oil. In 1961, NASA located its Manned Spacecraft Center on 1,000 acres next door and the area began to prosper. In 1962, Humble and Del Webb announced plans to develop 15,000 acres of the old West ranch for residential and industrial use. Their company, Friendswood Development, became operational in May, 1963 and in September of that year Texas Governor John Connolly formally dedicated the new Clear Lake City. Clear Lake City was annexed by Houston in 1977 and, by 1988, led the Houston area in the sale of new, single-family homes. The community, ideally situated on scenic Clear Lake almost exactly half-way between Houston and Galveston, fast became a “bedroom” community. Its primary employer continues to be the aerospace industry with significant contributions by retail business, recreation, tourism, and the new Bayport facility. Although Clear Lake was impacted by Hurricane Ike in 2008, the city has rebounded rapidly and continues to grow. Within a thirty minute drive residents can attend cultural, educational and recreational events. Ballet, opera, theaters, orchestras, museums, NASA, amusements parks, observatories, zoos, major league sports of every kind, and the beach at Galveston are all conveniently available.

A number of local annual events draw tourists to Clear Lake City, and include the Clear Lake Spring Fling and Boating Festival, the Ballunar Liftoff Festival, the Blessing of the Fleet, and the Greek Festival. Armand Bayou Nature Center is also a popular attraction. Clear Lake is home to the Lakewood Yacht Club which hosts the Texas Concours d’Elegance “Keels & Wheels” classic car and boat show, the largest of its class in the United States, every year on the first weekend in May.

Clear Lake City’s excellent public schools are part of the award-winning Clear Creek Independent School District. There are several community colleges, as well as quality four year universities and upper level graduate schools in close proximity.

There is a variety of housing available from traditional single-family homes in older subdivisions and new gated neighborhoods to luxury townhouses and residential high-rises. Prices for single-family homes range from the low $100,000s into the several millions. Townhouses range from below $100,000 into the $800,000s and luxury high rise units vary from the $400,000s to well over $1 million.
