Residents of The Woodlands truly appreciate the quiet, forested atmosphere of their community. Yet despite its sylvan setting, The Woodlands is only 27 miles from downtown Houston and 16 miles from George Bush Intercontinental Airport; accessibility to Interstate-45 and the Hardy Toll Road make for an easy commute. The choice for many commuters is The Woodland’s excellent Park-and-Ride system.
The Woodlands is a premier master-planned community whose development began over two decades ago and continues today. Home to almost 75,000 residents, The Woodlands offers excellent public and private schools, a 200 acre lake, six championship golf courses, parks, over 100 miles of hike-and-bike trails, two family YMCAs, an Olympic-class athletic facility, and an expanding business center.
Seven distinct villages comprise The Woodlands, with street names that reflect the surrounding forest habitat such as Moon Vine, Wally Bucket, Muskmellow, and Doe Run. One of the villages, Grogan’s Mill, is named for an actual timber mill that existed in the area. A variety of home styles are found, including golf course and lakefront properties, patio homes and townhomes, and homes customized specifically for active older adults. Most homes are brick, stucco or stucco/stone with prices ranging from near $100,000 to upwards of $2 million or more.
The Woodlands residents may take advantage of higher education opportunities in College Park, home to Montgomery College and The University Center. Excellent medical facilities include Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital and St. Luke’s Woodlands Community Medical Center.
The Woodlands Business Complex is composed of three development zones: the Metro center (The Woodlands downtown); the Trade Center for light manufacturing; and the 1,000 acre Research Forest for academic, high-tech and non-profit research institutes and industry. Companies who have located in The Woodlands include Chevron-Texaco, Anadarco Petroleum, Lexicon Genetics, Chicago Bridge and Iron, and Hewitt Associates.
